Chen is a Common artist at the Cathay Empire who is in love with Princess Mei Li and he becomes her husband at the end of the 10th movie and she loves him no matter what. In the 9th movie, Chen is under a spell, and is forced to live as a dragon and as a human for a couple of minutes during sunset. In order to break the spell, a child of the Cathay Emperor must surrender true love.
The Emperor of Cathay isn't very pleased that his daughter being in love with a peasant boy a common artist and (according to Prince Li) Mei Li defied his wishes and in return he broke her heart because Fang transformed him into a fire breathing dragon.

He looks like an ordinary young man and bit older than Princess Mei Li and Prince Li He wears a black outfit. For his wedding outfit he wears a red west and he also apprears in the Portait of the Royal Family at the end of the movie when the Emperor looking at his family who is staring to grow.

Kingdom of Music[]
At the beginning of the movie, Prince Li has entered to sing at the Swan Princess Music Festival joying 4 groups like him from different countries. Mei Li, meet her boyfriend at the bridge where he transforms back into his human form. Mei Li is certain to find a way to break the spell of her boyfriend but Chen didn't agree. Chen often tries to tell his girlfriend that she must find some else to love so he can be free. Mei tell Chen that she'll stow away in the ship of her brother and he shall follow them as well.
The next day, Mei Li keep her word and hides herself one of Prince Li's luggage and Chen flies near the ship. That night, Mei Li introduces her self, to Princess Odette and Prince Derek and she explains to them about the spell. Odette and Derek promise to help them. The 4 of them go to Swan Lake where Odette was captured and under Rothbart's spell.
Mei Li and Chen tried using the same words that Derek told Odette, but Chen didn't feel different at all and he is forced to change back into a dragon. Derek thinks that Scully is the only one who can help them. Meeting Scully, he agrees to help them too. All what he needs is dragon blood. As Derek shoots an arrow, to Chen's dragon body, blood came out and Mei Li gives him the potion to drink, but still he is a dragon.
Scully then goes the Cathay Empire, and when he sees the sorceress Fang, he reads an old scroll written in Chinese, and he hopes to remember all this. Back at Swan Lake Scully tells Derek to write down what he saw in the sand, and when Mei Li read it what it means, she's horrified, by saying that a child of the emperor has to surrender true love.
Chen is disappointed as he changes back in a dragon again, he says that Mei LI must find someone else to love, leaving Mei Li very sad about the conservation. She yells out of loud that she surrenders her love for Chen, but it doesn't work. Chen appears once more by sitting on the top of the castle, as he saying goodbye to her and Mei Li collapses in Derek's arms, and Odette and Derek take her back.
Prince Li and Alise had a rocky relationship, but eventually got to know each other better, with Li falling in love her. Also, Li won the Swan Princess music festival by singing a ballad in Mandarin Chinese. Li later discovers competition for Alise's heart in her friend Lucas. Alise also takes Li to Lord Rogers' Secret Chamber and tells him about how she and Lucas were spies and Li realizes she has feelings for Lucas. When the coming-of-age ball comes, Prince Li, who was to replace Lucas as the second male on Alise's dance card, was set to sing the same song English for Alise's dance with Derek, but when he noticed a heart broken Lucas attempting to leave, he surrenders his true love to Alise and asks Uberta to let Lucas dance with Alise. Chen is free from his spell thanks to Prince Li, making Mei Li very happy, and both share a happy moment.
Prince Li and Alise meet near the end of the movie by saying goodbye to each other and also that they won't forget each other as well.
A Royal Wedding. []
In this movie Mei Li, Prince Li, Chen Ru along with Odette and Derek who are invited to attend a royal wedding of Mei Li and Chen as they go back to the Emporer Of Cathay. Mei Li and her boyfriend are hiding inside Li's ship in fear that the Emperor might not be pleased that his own daughter marries a common artist. In they fear, they run away into the forest, but Li, brings them the news that their father gives his blessing as he had heard the Swallow Poem of Odette and that the spell is broken. Both are so happy to getting married. But the troubles have just began. Fang turns Mei Li, into an old 90 year old woman and she gains her physical shape. Will everyone things she is Mei Li, Li, Odette and Derek wanted to know what Fang is up to. When help comes all works together to stop Fang from her horrible plan as she wants to marry Chen herself. Queen Uberta, Lord Rogers, Puffin, Jean-Bob, and Speed are also in this mission.
When the wedding is coming it's up to Prince Li and Odette to save Mei Li. Fang's evilness grows as she turns into a giant snake to kill Mei Li. Chen along with the others are trapped inside the wall and they can't escape and all see in horror what's going on. Chen hears Mei Li say that Fang should do her evil upon Mei Li, but Odette jumps into the fire and saves Mei Li and Prince Li overturns the boiler with the help of Yu Yan. Fang is gone for ever. One by one all a coming back to the place where the wedding should've taken place. Derek runs to the place where Odette and Mei Li are.Mei Li cries as she holds Odette's unconscious body and Derek fears the worst for his wife. Slowly Odette open her eyes and she smiles weakly to all is surrounding her. The Emperor says: All Heil the Swan Princess. Chen agrees and all are kneeling down.
Trivia[]
- Chen is similar to Odette because like her, he also was cursed by being forced to be a Dragon, but there are differences:
- Odette had to stay at Swan Lake in order to turn human, while Chen was able to be anywhere.
- Odette could only turn into a human when the moonlight touched the lake, while Chen was able to turn into a human at dusk and would turn into a dragon once the sun fully set.
